Hi! I'm Yui Kondo, a research associate at Oxford Internet Institute. I lead the Algorithmic Mirror project, with a cross-institutional research team of 9+ members (MIT Media Lab, CMU Human Computer Interaction Institute, Oxford’s Synthetic Society, Oxford’s Child-centred AI Design lab at University of Oxford).

As a researcher working at the intersection of HCI, computational social science, and privacy-enhancing technologies, I design interactive tools that make algorithmic identities visible and contestable, giving people their own oars to navigate algorithmic waters with both purpose and imagination.

I pursue this vision in several ways:
  • I design interactive tools that synthesize siloed personal data across platforms, enabling users to examine and reshape their algorithmic identities.
  • I employ computational analysis to investigate how algorithmic systems suppress voices from marginalized communities, revealing phenomena like the "algorithmic glass ceiling" in feminist discourse.
  • I develop privacy-preserving systems that put boundary negotiation in users' hands, allowing them to navigate privacy-utility tradeoffs when sharing data.
  • I teach programming courses for girls and engage in policy advocacy to ensure equitable access to STEM education.

Outside of research, I am a national champion of karuta, a Japanese poetry card game. I craft photo essays, each centered on a single poem (See my essays). Having memorized the 100 poems curated by Fujiwara no Teika, I collect moments from daily life—quotes, encounters, scenes—that resonate with these ancient words.
